The young filmmaker Negin Ahmadi travels from Iran to Syrian Kurdistan to accompany a women’s militia fighting Islamic State. Who are these women who expose themselves to such dangers, and for whom the struggle for their own dignity is a literal battle? Ahmadi’s cinematic search for an answer repeatedly brings her back to the question of what it means to be a woman. Dream’s Gate thus becomes a personal diary that combines the brutality of war with intimate moments and explores ideas of femininity, freedom and self-determination.
A densely layered political film offering unique insights into women’s lived realities.
